KUCHING: Pl a z a Me rd e k a launched its Chinese New Year Special Celebration with the theme “Keeping the Tradition” here on Sunday evening with the tossing of Yee Sang and A Lion Dance Performance.
The celebration was officiated by Managing Director of Plaza Merdeka Holdings, Dato Steve Ng Thian Yew, together with invited guests India Street Pedestrian Mall Chairman and Kuching City North Hall Commission (DBKU) Member, Dato’ Wee Hong Seng, General Manager of Plaza Merdeka Shopping Centre, Cheah Kheng Mun, representative of Carpenter Street, Sim Kiang Chok and General Manager of Utusan Sarawak, Bobby Tham.
The tossing of Yee Sang symbolizes good luck for the New Year and is considered a symbol of abundance and prosperity. The event kicked off with 24 Drums from Chung Hua Middle Schools No.3, and further livened up with a Lion dance performance, the appearance of the God of Fortune and a Chinese Orchestra.
In his brief speech, Dato Steve Ng thanked all the staff of Plaza Merdeka from the Security personnel to the Management team for doing very well. He said everyone including the Promotion team has contributed. He also thanked all those people who come to the Plaza Merdeka for their patronage. He said Plaza Merdeka hoped to continue to sustain and make sure that Plaza Merderka will be the Centre piece for the historic or the Old Town of Kuching.
As Plaza Merdeka has always emphasized on the terms of giving – they gave away RM1,000 woth of groceries to Green Ribbon Association and RM1,000 worth of vouchers to Rumah Kanak-Kanak Toh Norkiah for this New Year season. The event was concluded with a spectacular view of fireworks display on top of The Waterfront Hotel.
This year Chinese New Year is even more special with the opening of Subway fast food chain in East Malaysia, which will be opened on February 10, 2018. Members of the public are invited to join the opening as there are voucher and freebies to be given away.
The first Subway in East Malaysia has fulfilled the dreams and longings of Kuchingites as they no longer have to travel to Kuala Lumpur just to have it. Shoppers can also redeem freebies and participate in lucky draws with a minimum purchase of RM88 in a single receipt.

Shoppers can also spend RM50 and guess the amount of coins on display to win cash vouchers worth RM100! Bamboo Street, the Chinese New Year Bazaar is ongoing from January 25 to February 18. As Chinese New Year this year is two days after Valentine’s Day, there will be several giveaways for Valentine’s Day.
These include free Macarons from Tkisses Macaron when shoppers spend RM99 in a single receipt ; free fragrance soap from Natural Looks for sharing your favourite Valentine’s moments in Plaza Merdeka on Instagram; and a bouquet of flowers with a minimum purchase RM520 from the Mall.
