KUCHING: Plaza Merdeka, a prominent shopping mall in the centre of this city launched their Chinese New Year festivities with the theme “Path to Prosperity” yesterday morning.

The glittering event saw the unveiling of the Chinese New Year Bazaar at the main atrium of the mall.

The bazaar, decorated with lanterns and traditional Chinese motiffs also sells costumes and snacks associated with the

festival.

The management will also be hosting several events prior to the New Year celebrations such as a sushi eating competition on Jan 26 and a “yee sang” (special Chinese dish) making competition on Feb 2.

Apart from organising various promotional activities 126 outlets in the mall will also have their own promotions and sales prior to the festival.

“Since opening our doors in 2012, every year Plaza Merdeka celebrates all festivals as part of our commitment to promote tolerance and understanding among people of all races, religions and backgrounds in Sarawak,” Plaza Merdeka managing director Datuk Steve Ng in his speech to launch the event.

The guest of honour for the event was Professor Gao Ciulian, wife of Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Cheng Guangzhong.

During the launch Plaza Merdeka also presented a donation of groceries worth RM1,288  to the Green Ribbon Society.

The event concluded with the tossing of the traditional “yee sang” by the honourable guests and a tour of the bazaar.
