KUCHING: The Unity Government is considering the continuation of the eBelia Rahmah programme, which assists youth aged 18 to 20.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently said that any initiative by the government to help students and other youth would depend on the government’s financial capacity and expected revenue.

The eBelia Rahmah 2023 programme was carried out from June 26 to Aug 22.

It involved a RM200 e-cash credit payout to youth aged 18 to 20 or full-time students at higher education institutions (IPT) and was aimed at fostering cashless payment culture and alleviating the financial burden of youth.

New Sarawak Tribune spoke to several members of the public to share their thoughts on the matter.

The eBelia Rahmah programme needs to be continued for all IPT students to meet their needs and reduce their expenses in various aspects, including transportation, food and accommodation. The financial assistance can also cover the purchase of study materials such as books as well as internet services.

The government must continue with the eBelia Rahmah programme. If possible, it is hoped that the government will credit it to student cards (kad siswa) rather than e-wallet accounts because e-wallet purchases are limited to certain shops.

The initiative must be continued by the government as it can provide financial support to those pursuing their tertiary education.

I believe it will be better if the government can show constant efforts or initiatives to help the people. For the eBelia Rahmah initiative, I think the government should also consider including students aged from 15 onwards, as it can be very helpful, especially for those who stay in boarding schools and those from underprivileged families.
