KUCHING: If road bullies believe they can get away scot-free, think again.
Police have reassured the public that they will come down hard on road bullies who verbally insult, yell, physical threaten or resort to dangerous driving targeted at other road users.
Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah pledged that punitive action would be taken in accordance with the law against road menace suspects.
The warning came following two road rage cases where the victims were threatened and sustained injuries. Video clips of incidents had gone viral on social media.
“The first case on April 20 involved a 58-year-old victim who was hit by a suspect with a blunt object.
“The victim was controlling the traffic at Jalan Astana, where a fatal accident took place involving a motorcycle and a lorry.
“As the victim controlled the traffic flow while waiting for the police to arrive, the suspect approached and hit the victim in the face and the head,” Ahsmon told a press conference today at the Kuching district police headquarters.
The suspect was arrested the following day on April 21 under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
Police said the suspect had previous criminal records – four criminal cases and three drug cases.
The suspect will appear in court on May 31.
In the second case, which happened on May 1, a video went viral where a four-wheel drive driver acted aggressively, overtaking and obstructing a road user.
“The incident took place at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, near Wisma Seberkas. The driver exited his vehicle, knocked the car window and threatened the road user who recorded the event.
“The suspect was arrested by the police on May 2 at 2.15pm, even though it was Hari Raya,” said Ahsmon.
The suspect was arrested under Section 506 of the Penal Code and his case will be referred to the State Attorney’s Office.
