KUCHING: Police detained 49 persons for violating the movement control order (MCO) in Sarawak yesterday, bringing to 174 violators arrested since the order was implemented on March 18.
Commissioner of Police Datuk Aidi Ismail said of the 49, four were females, detained in a 24-hour operation from 8am Saturday to 8am yesterday.
He said they were arrested for not having specific reason to be out on the road and public area and involved in gambling activities.
Kuching recorded the highest number with 17 arrests, followed by Sibu (7), Serian (5), Bintulu (5), Padawan (4), Matu Daro (2), Meradong (2) and one each in Kota Samarahan,Marudi, Lubok Antu and Kanowit.
A total of 35 suspects were released on police bail after their statements were recorded. Another 14 have been remanded for four days for gambling and cock fighting in Kuching and Padawan.
The cases are being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code and Regulation 7 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Area 2020), which carries an imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of RM10,000 or both.
