BAU: Two men were nabbed by police on Sunday (June 14) for allegedly smuggling vegetables and fruits from a neighbouring country at Suba Buan here.

One of the men was a 43-year-old local while the other, a 27-year-old foreigner. Both were arrested during a roadblock around 12.30pm, said Bau district police chief, DSP Poge Nyaon.

He said a team of Bau Police Crime Investigation Division (CID) personnel stopped a lorry that was transporting vegetables and fruits to Bau town.

“They arrested both men and seized the lorry and goods. The goods were believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country,” Poge said in a statement.

The goods consisted of 18 sacks of dragon fruits, 15 sacks of beans, 12 sacks of ginger, eight sacks of sweet potatoes and six sacks of yam worth about RM15,000.

Poge added that the foreigner was arrested under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 because his travel document had expired.

The case is being investigated under Regulation 8(1) of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) (No.6) Regulations 2020.
