KUCHING: Police arrested 22 individuals on Monday in an anti-crime operation codenamed ‘Op Tapis’, seizing drugs weighing 27.65g in the process.
District deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the integrated operation carried out by personnel from Kuching NCID and assisted by various departments and police stations, took place from 8am to 5pm around Petra Jaya, Santubong and Kampung Bintawa here.
The first arrest took place around Santubong at 10.20am in which a man in his 30s was arrested for possessing drugs believed to be syabu.
“Thirty plastic packets of drugs were found on the man. The drugs weighed around 19.67g and valued at RM1,967.”
Meanwhile, the second arrest took place around Petra Jaya at 10.15am. Another man in his 30s was arrested for possessing drugs.
Among the drugs seized were eight plastic packets and 13 straw tubes of syabu (6.86g) and eight Erimin 5 pills in a four-packet strip (1.12g). All are valued at RM806.
“The team also arrested 20 drug addicts aged between 15 and 45 around Kampung Bintawa and Santubong.
“Overall, 18 men and four women (including the two men in possession of the drugs), will be investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The Section provides for a fine up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to two years.”
Supt Merbin pointed out that from the operation, police managed to identify the drug pusher and further action would follow suit.
“Police-community cooperation is inseparable in eradicating drug abuse activities, hence, the public is urged to provide any information on drug distribution and abuse in their respective areas.”
