KUALA LUMPUR: The police went on high alert throughout the country immediately after the attack on two mosques in New Zealand last Friday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said today.
He said policemen were instructed to monitor all temples and churches for fear of any retaliation.
“Immediately after the incident happened, I instructed the chief police officers and all ground officers to be on alert. To monitor churches and temples and so on. Every action was taken for fear of retaliation,” he told reporters after the signing of an MoU between the Police Cooperative, Retired Senior Police Officers Association of Malaysia and Malaysian Safety Industry Association at Bukit Aman.
Mohamad Fuzi was asked to comment on the security measures taken after a gunman opened fire on worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch during the Friday prayers, killing 50 and injuring several others.
On the arrest of 12 Filipinos and a Malaysian in Sabah last week for suspected involvement in terrorist activities, he said the police are investigating whether members of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf or Maute groups are in hiding in Peninsular Malaysia besides Sabah. – Bernama
