KUCHING: Police are hoping to establish a new police station in the Gita area to improve community safety and law enforcement there.

According to Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah, the existing Gita police station, which oversees a vast region, stretching from the Matang border to the Padawan area and into the urban areas, is facing the challenge of managing its responsibilities with limited personnel.

“The intended site for the new police station is the Demak area, and its precise location is currently being assessed to ensure it suits the community’s needs,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after attending a Townhall Programme at Taman Samariang Aman’s multipurpose hall on today (Oct 21).

“The proposal, which has been in the works for some time, seeks to address the unique needs of the Gita area by creating a more localised and responsive law enforcement presence.

“The current police station, while once effective, is now facing the complexities of an ever-growing community and changing dynamics.

“There is a necessity for this change, recognising that a more focused and well-staffed police presence would not only enhance the administration of law and order but also enable more effective crime prevention efforts and community engagement,” he said.

“In discussing the proposal, community leaders and the police have emphasised the need to tailor police services to the specific requirements of Gita and its surrounding areas,” said Ahsmon.

This approach, he added, recognises that the needs of urban and rural regions may differ and calls for a more nuanced strategy in addressing community safety concerns.

He said, the proposal’s vision extends beyond improving law enforcement efficiency.

It also aims to increase the strength and logistics of the police force, ensuring a more robust and responsive service for the community.

“The proposal was initially submitted in July 2021 and has since undergone several discussions with the state police headquarters, while the final decision on its implementation will be determined by the higher authorities at Bukit Aman,” said Ahsmon.
