KUCHING: Police here opened an investigation paper into the misuse of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Sri Fadillah Yusof’s photo for an investment advertisement on social media.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the photo was used without permission by a party offering a syariah-compliant investment scheme on Facebook.

Police received a report on Sunday (Jan 15) regarding the alleged use of the photo to attract the public to participate in the scheme.

“An investigation paper has been opened under Section 500 of the Penal Code, which carries a fine or a jail term of up to two years or both, if convicted.

“The investigation is also being conducted under Section 233 of the Malaysian Multimedia Communications Act 1998, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine up to RM50,000 or both, if convicted,” he said.

Ahsmon urged anyone with information on the matter to come forward and assist in the investigation.
