KUCHING: Relationship between the police and the community is key to tackling crime in the capital city and district.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said that it is the responsibility of the police to have a close relationship with the community.

“As close ties between the police and community are developed, this will enable the community to pass on (necessary) information to us (the police) and the police will manage the crime according to the existing laws,” he said.

Ahsmon then said that the relationship is necessary and he intends to continue efforts to strengthen the relationship between the police and the local community here.

“Another purpose for me coming today is to hear for myself from the community of traders, I do believe that the relationship is needed and thirdly, I want to make sure that all my officers and members do their job accordingly.

“We plan for them to conduct patrol (duties) to maintain peace and ensure security,” he told reporters after attending a Community Policing Walkabout at India Street on Friday.

Sharing to the media the feedback gathered from the public, Ahsmon was told that there have been big improvements and positive differences made now compared to previous years.

“So we will continue (with) this programme to ensure that our relationship is getting close between the community and the police. It’s easy for us to do the job, because our job is to ensure that public security and peace are assured,” he said.

He then urged the public to convey necessary information to the police especially regarding crime activities.

“Any form of information related to crime, we ask the community to share with us because the information that you give us will give us great success (in future investigations),” he said.
