KUCHING: Police are helping to control traffic flow at the five roundabouts in the Kota Samarahan-Kuching expressway to alleviate the severe congestion during peak hours.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said five personnel from the Kota Samarahan district police headquarters would be stationed daily at the roundabouts, both in the morning and afternoon.

“Traffic congestion occurs during peak hours around 6am to 8am and 4.30pm to 6pm.

“The cause of congestion at each roundabout is due to the large number of vehicles heading in the same direction from Kota Samarahan to Kuching in the morning and from Kuching to Kota Samarahan in the afternoon,” he said after launching Ops Selamat 17 here on Wednesday (Jan 26).

He stressed that this was a short-term solution to the ongoing issue.

Last week, the state Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development requested help from the police to control traffic at the five roundabouts.
