KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau (SPCB) chief Wilfred Yap has urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the thefts of a van, two cars and four motorcycles which were stolen and sold to a scrap metal factory.

He urged the police to be serious in checking these scrap yard dealers so that they would think twice about buying stolen metal items.

Yap said tight enforcement was the solution to overcoming this issue.

“It is also timely for the relevant authorities to further tighten the law and impose stricter rules and regulations on those buying and selling scrap metals. He said the scrap metal owners should know who were selling them genuine scrap metal and who were selling stolen metal.

He was recently approached by a mechanic who sought his advice and assistance as the vehicles were left under his care in his village in Padawan.

The mechanic worked full time at a workshop at Mile 10 and he would bring back these vehicles to repair during the weekend to earn extra income. It was when he was working at Mile 10 that the vehicles left in his kampung were stolen. When the workshop owner asked him to bring back the repaired vehicles, he had to tell him the truth.

After searching high and low, the mechanic and workshop owner found the stolen vehicles in a recycling factory in Muara Tuang.

Yap said two police reports were made on September 14 and 17 respectively.
