Policemen plead not guilty to negligence

MIRI: Two policemen pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate Court here today to a charge of negligently exposing a girl detainee to male detainees while in a police lock-up at Miri Centre Police station.

The accused, Brase Omang, 54, from Desa Indah 2, Bandar Baru Permyjaya and Edmund Jali, 44, with residential address at Miri Police Headquarters (IPD Miri), both ranked corporal, are charged under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001.

They face a fine of not more than RM50,000 or imprisonment not more than 20 years or both, if convicted.

They had allegedly allowed the cell of a male detainee, Zuraini Razzi Ranni, to remain unlocked and to have access to the key of a cell where the girl was detained which resulted in her being raped.

Based on the facts of the case, the policemen were accused of committing the offence between 10.51pm on January 8 and 6.50am on January 9 this year.

Brase was represented by counsel Ranbir Singh Sangha while Edmund by Gurvir Singh Sandhu.

Magistrate Md Syafique fixed February 22 for case management and allowed the two accused to be released on RM10,000 bail each with two local sureties.
