KUCHING : A state-level speech competition themed “Sayangi Malaysiaku: Malaysia Bersih” was held at Politeknik Kuching yesterday.
The contest was aimed at strengthening the spirit of identity, patriotism and unity.
“I believe the programme is capable of enhancing the love and pride in the country as well as strengthening the use of the national language by the various races in their daily lives,” said Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol (pic) when officiating at the competition.
Mordi urged more people to join the annual competition organised in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration.
The programme was held with a face-to-face concept and TED talk to enhance awareness, knowledge and understanding of national policies.
According to Bernama, Mordi wants education on politics to begin from the school level.
He said based on his experience, many rural folk, including adults did not have adequate information on the voting process and general elections.
“I have voiced this in Parliament during the debate on the voting age, my worry is the rural areas (Sarawak) where the awareness (of residents) about politics is very low.
“I feel that they (youths aged 18 and older in rural areas) may not be ready (to vote in the state general election),” he said.
The Sarawak election must be held at the latest by June 6, 2021.
Canigia Udin Ben from Kapit emerged champion in the contest, winning RM1,500 while second place went to Zulfadli Emran from Lawas, with RM1,000, while third place went to Arif Adam Patahul Ariffin from Meradong with a prize of RM500.
