MIRI: Sarawak’s attainment of high-income status in Malaysia can be attributed to the political stability experienced in the state, according to Datuk Rosey Yunus.
The Sarawak Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development expressed pride in the achievement, referencing a statement made by Dr Apurva Sanghi, the World Bank Lead Economist for Malaysia.
“We are deeply grateful to our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his continuous efforts in seeking alternative funding for the state.
“He ensures that we have sufficient funds for the development of Sarawak, and this achievement is a testament to his forward-thinking approach for the benefit of the people and the state itself,” she stated.
Rosey spoke to the media after attending the Sarawak TYT Challenge Trophy for the state-level Youth Forum competition here on today (July 6).
On July 6, Sanghi tweeted that Sarawak had surpassed the 2022 high-income threshold by exceeding a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of USD13,205.
The data also revealed that Sarawak is classified as a high-income state, alongside Penang and the federal territories of Labuan and Kuala Lumpur.
Rosey also addressed the issue of the collapsed Drinking Horse structure at Tusan Beach.
She confirmed that the state government has allocated funds to rebuild a replica of the iconic structure.
“We hope to see the structure restored by 2024. We aim to rebuild it as it is one of our unique tourist attractions.”
The structure collapsed in February 2020 due to natural forces.
