SARATOK: The ‘politics of development’ ideology of the late Pehin Sri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud was the best policy for the development of Sarawak.
The acknowledgment comes from the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz, a former Kalaka assemblyman.
He said Taib’s wisdom greatly contributed to rural development with various meaningful ideas through this concept.
“In terms of politics, Taib was very firm in government affairs and party principles,” he said.
“I still remember during the Ming Court Crisis in 1987, he did not yield to the pressure from Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub’s Permas and PBDS.
“When the state election was held, Barisan Nasional (BN) won, and Taib remained as the Chief Minister of Sarawak,” he said.
He recalled losing in the 1987 state election by 77 votes to Datuk Abang Yusuf Puteh (Permas).
“But in the next election in 1991, I once again ran under the BN ticket and won the Kalaka seat with a majority of over 6,000 votes,” he added.
Much of Wahab’s career as a representative of the people unfolded during Taib’s era.
