KUCHING: Nicholas Kudi, the Baleh assemblyman, reckons that polling period for the 15th General Election (GE15) will be no later than end of November.
Following the dissolution of Parliament on Monday (Oct 10), speculation has been rife on the possible date for polling, with several factors to be considered.
These factors include the current monsoon season as well as the Election Commission’s (EC) preparations for yet another election.
Nicholas predicted that polling day would be Nov 5, which is a Saturday, so that voters could cast their ballots.
“It will be no later than end of November. From my personal view, it will happen on this date as from the middle of November until the end of December, the Malaysian Meteorological Department forecast that heavy rain will be hitting some parts of the country.
“And due to this monsoon season, a lot of places will be affected by floods.
“Thus, this could prevent the EC from running the polls smoothly and prevent voters from going out to vote.
“Anyway, the dates will be finalised by the EC soon enough,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Wednesday (Oct 12).
“Whatever it is, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready to face GE15 and win all the seats to be contested,” he added.
In a statement on Tuesday (Oct 11), the EC said a meeting would be held on Oct 20 at 10am at Menara SPR in Putrajaya, to be chaired by chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, to discuss the dates for GE15.
The meeting, among others, would also be discussing to determine the dates for the Bugaya by-election in Sabah, election writ, candidate nomination day, voting day and the electoral register that would be used and other preparations.
The statement added that a press conference would be held immediately after the meeting.
