SERIAN: A single mother, Agnes Aleng, who lives in a dilapidated house at Kampung Sungai Paku in Simunjan, now has a reasonably comfortable place to call home.
Her dilapidated house has been repaired – thanks to the state Welfare Department and generous donations from well-wishers.
Thanks also to St Theresa’s Parish Rector Father Paul Herry who brough Aleng’s deplorable living condition to the attention of the media.
Herry, who is also the Society of St Vincent De Paul (SSVP) Serian spiritual advisor, pleaded for donations to help repair her house. SSVP also took charge of the project.
Aleng, who survives on selling jungle produce collected from a nearby oil palm estate, has also been granted a monthly allowance by the state Welfare Department.
According to Herry, despite having the monthly welfare assistance, Aleng will continue to do gardening and collect jungle produce for sale.
Both Herry and Aleng expressed their appreciation to the newspapers, state Welfare Department, St Theresa’s Parish Pastoral Council, SSVP and the generous donors that helped.
