SIBU: No African Swine Flu (ASF) cases have been detected in Sibu’s commercial pig farms, villages and abattoirs.
Assistant Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang said this was based on results from testing done by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak.
“All pork that is being sold in Sibu markets is safe for consumption. However, do not buy pork from unknown sources.
“Also, due to abnormal deaths of pigs in certain parts of Sarawak, I urge the public to not buy live pigs from unknown sources as well.
“I have discussed with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting to cooperate with DVS in ensuring pork is being safely supplied to the locals,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 18).
Tiang pointed out that SMC and DVS were working closely together in ensuring only licensed farms are supplying pork to butchers.
He said both departments would continuously monitor pig farms in Sibu in the effort to prevent ASF from spreading.
DVS had hence disallowed movements of live pigs in the state, he said.
“ASF has happened in Sarawak and the same goes to West Malaysia and other countries.
“DVS Sarawak will continue to investigate the abnormal death of live pigs and implement relevant measures to prevent it from spreading,” he added.
