KUCHING: Starting next year, students from Sarawak will have the chance to apply for scholarships to pursue Master’s degrees in various engineering fields.

In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that these scholarships are offered by three local companies namely from Yayasan Sarawak, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS), and Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd.

“I have asked Sarawak Petchem to provide scholarships for Master’s degrees in chemical engineering for two students, possibly those studying abroad.

“Meanwhile, PETROS will provide scholarships for two students pursuing studies in petrochemical engineering.

“Yayasan Sarawak offers two types of scholarships to students: one in aerospace engineering and the other in satellite engineering,” he said.

He said this while speaking during the 31st Premier Sarawak Special Award and symbolic presentation of free laptops and book vouchers to IPT students at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here today.

He said that all of the scholarships offers are specifically for Master’s degree students.

“And for students who receive these scholarships, they are bonded to work with the sponsoring companies.

“I mention this because even though many Sarawakians working abroad have returned, the number of workers is still insufficient.

“Therefore, I have asked all related companies to offer scholarships to Master’s degree students… perhaps in the future, scholarships for Doctorate (PhD) degrees will be offered based on new developments they learn about,” he said.

At the event, 50 students from public and private higher learning institutions received free laptops from the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak.

Recipients included six students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, 10 from i-CATS University College, 12 from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), 11 from Universiti Teknologi Mara Sarawak (UiTM), and 11 from Polytechnic.

Additionally, the 31st Premier Sarawak Special Award  were awarded to schools, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA), teachers, and students who made significant contributions to education in both academic and non-academic areas for the years 2022 and 2023.
