The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has reported a strong earthquake occurring off the coast of Central America at 8.22am today (July 19).

The earthquake, measuring 6.5 on the magnitude scale, struck at a depth of 98 kilometres with its epicentre located at 12.8 degrees north, 88.0 degrees west.

The quake was centred approximately 1,292 kilometres southeast of Puebla, Mexico.

There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia resulting from this earthquake.
