SIBU: A 25-year old man claimed trial at Sessions Court today (July 25) for a shooting case which occurred at Jalan Wong King Huo here on New Year’s Day this year.
When the nature of charge was read and explained to Billy Harris Wee through an interpreter, he understood the charge and the consequences of pleading not guilty to the charge.
Presiding Sessions Court Judge Marutin Pagan granted the accused to be released on cash bail in the sum of RM7,000 with two sureties.
He fixed the hearing for pre-trial case management on Sept 3.
According to the facts of the case, Billy was indicted on a charge of abetting with two others aged 21 and 32 who are still on the loose, in an attempted murder by discharging a firearm at a 29-year-old man and caused hurt to the victim.
The offence was allegedly committed at an eatery along Jalan Wong King Huo on Jan 1 2024 at about 5.41 pm.
Framed under Section 307 of the Penal code, read together with Section 109 of the same Code, an offender could face up to 20 years imprisonment as well as liable to fine, and if the act causes injury, could face imprisonment of up to 20 years upon conviction.
The accused was represented by legal counsel Ranbir Singh.
On July 3, the police arrested four suspects including the accused around Sibu town, and another suspect in Johor on the following day.
The other four suspects, represented by legal counsel Boston Ho, Daniel Ling, and Alexander Ling, were released on bail (undeposited) with one surety each, and will become prosecution witnesses for the case.
