KUCHING: Despite a leadership change in Singapore, Sarawak is committed to maintaining its robust trade relations with the country, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He expressed confidence in a smooth transition under Singapore’s incoming Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong.
“We have already met with Lawrence Wong, who will be assuming the role of Prime Minister.
“We had a positive outlook on the continued collaboration and mutual understanding between Singapore and Malaysia, particularly in the areas of Singapore-Sarawak relations.
“Given these successful partnerships, we remain optimistic about their continuation,” he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house hosted by Datuk Seri Mohd Naroden Majais, advisor to the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment, at his residence on Tuesday (April 16).
Highlighting Wong’s extensive background, including his tenure as Singapore’s Finance Minister, Abang Johari said this could be the potential for a promising future in bilateral relations.
“Wong has also shared insights into Singapore’s targeted assistance for low-income groups using a voucher system at essential food stores, facilitated by trade union stores. This model could serve as an inspiration for targeted assistance programmes elsewhere,” he added.
Regarding energy supply, Abang Johari noted that the state was implementing plans expected to proceed smoothly.
“We remain confident in the ongoing projects and look forward to maintaining a strong, productive relationship with Singapore’s new leadership,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s Office in Singapore has announced that Wong will officially assume the role of the Prime Minister on May 15. The announcement follows reports from several international media outlets that current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who has led the country since 2004, is preparing to step down.
