Premier calls on young teachers to step up

SIBU: The increasingly complex and dynamic challenges of the education world must be addressed by strengthening the competencies of teachers, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“It is understood that being a teacher is challenging, but it is hoped that young teachers will face these challenges with resilience and positivity,” he said.

Every challenge should be seen as an opportunity to learn and grow, he added.

Towards this end Abang Johari said young teachers are the backbone of the state’s legacy of educational excellence.

“It is hoped that the young teachers present today will demonstrate high levels of commitment and unwavering dedication in their roles as educators of the nation’s children.

“As role models for students, their commitment will significantly impact the students’ motivation and success,” he said.

He said this in his speech read by the Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, at the opening ceremony of the Persidangan Guru Muda Sarawak (PGMS) 2024 at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) on Saturday (July 27)

Abang Johari also highlighted the importance of creativity and innovation in teaching, especially in this era of rapidly advancing technology.

“Technology and modern teaching methods should be utilised to engage students and make learning more interactive and enjoyable.

“Continuous improvement through further education, attending courses, and participating in professional development programmes is encouraged for young teachers,” he added.

He stressed that education is a continually evolving field, requiring constant updates to knowledge and skills.

“Education is viewed as a collective effort that requires support and cooperation from everyone involved.

“Young teachers are urged to collaborate with colleagues, school administrators, parents, local communities, and both government and private agencies to foster a supportive and conducive learning environment.”

In addition to imparting knowledge, Abang Johari stressed the importance of instilling good values and character in students.

He said a holistic education, in both academic and moral aspects, can produce well-rounded and principled individuals.

Meanwhile, on the conference, Abang Johari said that it provide an excellent platform for the exchange of ideas, sharing of experiences, and planning of more effective educational strategies.

“The Sarawak government is committed to supporting initiatives that enhance the quality of education. It will ensure that teachers in Sarawak receive the necessary training and support to excel in their duties.

“Furthermore, efforts will be intensified to provide top-notch educational infrastructure for the benefit of all students in Sarawak,” he said.
