Premier conveys his condolences to the family following the passing of Affendi.

KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late former Ministry of Housing’s permanent secretary Affendi Keli, who perished in a house fire at Lorong Bunga Tongkeng, Kampung Gita here last Sunday evening.

The condolence message was shared in Sarawak Public Communication Unit’s (UKAS) media WhatsApp group yesterday (Nov 14).

Affendi, 69, along with his daughter Aneeqa Pandi, 35; and his niece Nor Hasyidah Ajis, 22, died in the fire incident.

The late Affendi or Pandi was born on May 25, 1954. He obtained a Diploma in Town and Country Planning from Glasgow School of Arts, Scotland; Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Design from Oxford Polytechnic, UK; and a Masters in Urban Design from Oxford Polytechnic, UK.

The deceased had served the state since 1978. His started his career in the Sarawak Land and Survey Department as a planning officer until 1989.

Affendi was appointed as senior planning officer at the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) in 1989, deputy director of planning, development and environmental management from 1995 to 1997 and director of DBKU from 1997 to 2001.

Affendi was acting general manager of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) from 2001 to 2002.

Then in 2002 until 2008, he was the deputy manager at the Borneo Development Corporation (BDC).

In 2009, he was appointed as permanent secretary at the Sarawak Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for three years before he was transferred to the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation before retiring in May 2014. He was appointed as the Malaysian Sports Co-ordinator on a two-year contract from 2014 to 2016.
