MIRI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expressed optimism that Sarawak’s income for 2024 will surpass that of previous years, driven by various ambitious development projects.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed dredging and associated works project at the Batang Baram Delta on Wednesday, he hinted that the state’s financial performance would be revealed in the coming months.
“Income for 2024 may be higher than last year. I will announce it in November,” said Abang Johari, signalling positive economic growth for the state.
The Batang Baram Delta project, valued at RM208.98 million, is set to be a game-changer for the region.
The project will take 33 months to complete, with the expected completion date slated for March 2027.
This initiative is part of the state’s long-term strategy to boost economic growth and transform Sarawak into a regional hub for tourism and trade.
Abang Johari shared his grand vision for Sarawak, comparing it to the transformation of Dubai.
“By 2035, this area will be like the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. It used to be the sea, but now it’s a world-class attraction. I believe this place has the potential to become a key tourism and trade port, rivalling the port of Singapore,” he said.
Highlighting the region’s potential, he spoke of the vast economic opportunities the Batang Baram Delta project could bring, including tourism, trade, and the handicraft industry.
“When I see the economic potential here, I believe our investment will pay off. This project will change the landscape, it’s going to change, it’s going to change,” he reiterated.
The Premier also mentioned plans to develop a new port in Miri by 2030, which would bolster Sarawak’s standing in the global maritime industry.
“We aim to create a new port by 2030, which will complement the growing tourism and trade activities. I am committed to securing the necessary funds to ensure these projects materialise, and Sarawak’s income continues to grow,” he said.
Abang Johari emphasised that Sarawak is positioning itself as a hub for carbon storage services, leveraging the Batang Baram Delta area, which is suitable for carbon sequestration.
“The area is perfect for carbon storage, a service in increasing demand globally,” he added.
In terms of technological advancement, Abang Johari also spoke about the modernisation of ports through containerisation and automated cranes.
“The future of our ports lies in automation, and Sarawak is ready to embrace this change to enhance our trade capabilities,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Premier expressed confidence that Sarawak’s income will continue to rise, predicting that the state’s financial standing in 2025 would surpass previous years.
“The World Bank has recognised Sarawak’s economic achievements for 2022 and 2023. I am confident that by 2025, our income will exceed last year’s figures,” he concluded.
