KUCHING: Sarawak’s successful hosting of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) has proved the state’s readiness to co-host the SEA Games in 2027.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg attributed the success of SUKMA to the hard work of the organising committee led by Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and his team.
“To Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, we are ready to be the co-host of the SEA Games in 2027,” Abang Johari said during the SUKMA opening ceremony at Sarawak Stadium on Saturday night.
He described SUKMA as more than just a competition between states, highlighting its role in nurturing young talent, fostering sportsmanship, and strengthening national unity.
“This year, we are honoured to host SUKMA in Sarawak,” he said.
“The event brings together Malaysians from diverse backgrounds, promoting patriotism and national pride.”
Abang Johari proposed holding SUKMA competitions in different divisions to expose the youth to Sarawak’s cultural and ethnic diversity.
He also emphasised the economic benefits of hosting the games, particularly for the service industry.
“Through SUKMA, we will witness the emergence of new sports stars,” he said.
Encouraging the athletes, Abang Johari urged them to face challenges with determination and strive for excellence.
“Remember, every effort brings you closer to success,” he added.
