KUCHING: Sarawak will consider the proposal to impose a minimum deposit of RM2 million or purchase of property worth no less than RM1.5 million as requirement for businessmen and investors to migrate to the state.
In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg pointed out that since the state has become the top three in Malaysia due to its economic performance, investors have started to see Sarawak’s potential.
“We are like a gem to them. With our performance, we have overtaken Johor Bahru and possibly will overtake Selangor.
“That is why a lot of people expressed their intentions to migrate here but we want those who bring new ideas to the state. If the ideas are good, we will discuss more about it,” he said after officiating the national level Water World Water Day Celebration at Kuching Waterfront here Sunday.
“If they invest RM2 million here and they want to be permanent residents, why not? They are a business community, therefore, it is not wrong to invest their money here in exchange for being permanent residents in Sarawak,” he said.
Moreover, he added that if they were to buy property here that costs a minimum RM1.5 million, it will generate development from the housing point of view.
“What is needed are the ideas they bring into the state. That is why I encourage such a proposal as it will not only be able to generate job opportunities but also help generate our economy here,” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof had earlier floated the idea of imposing a minimum deposit of RM2 million or purchasing property worth not less than RM1.5 million as a requirement for businessmen and investors to migrate to the state.
According to him, this is due to the fact that many of his business friends have expressed their intentions to migrate to Sarawak following the potential of business prospects in the state.
“At least this proposed move can generate more income for our state in exchange for these people getting permanent resident status in Sarawak,” he said.
