SIBU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has named the new mosque in Sibu Jaya which costs RM32 million, Masjid Al-Madinah Al-Husna.

According to Abang Johari, the mosque stands as an iconic structure in Sibu Jaya due to its unique kite-like design and distinctive colours.

“Its colour sets it apart; the design incorporates elements of ethnic culture. There are floral motifs, reminiscent of the garden of paradise mentioned in the Quran (Taman Firdaus),” he said at the mosque’s opening ceremony today (Mar 1).

Abang Johari emphasised that every development area overseen by the state government would include infrastructure and facilities for the community, with religious establishments such as mosques being a priority.

“Soon, we will also construct a mosque in Kemuyang using new technology. (It will have) no pillars, as it will be built using innovative methods. God willing, we’ll construct another one for the people in Sibu.

“Eventually, we’ll also enhance mosques at the district level for use by the Muslim community, setting Islam as an example for others to follow,” he added.

The Al-Madinah Al-Husna mosque, which has a capacity of 3,000, was built in August 2019; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project experienced delays and was completed in October of last year.

Among those present were Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee and Sarawak Islamic Council president Datuk Misnu Taha.
