Premier pays final respects, hails Mutang’s devoted service

MIRI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg led the State government in paying final respects to Senate President Datuk Mutang Tagal who died on Friday. 

He expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Sarawak government to Mutang’s family and paid a moving tribute to his immense contributions to both Sarawak and Malaysia.

“His legacy spans decades of dedicated service, notably as a Member of Parliament representing Lawas, where he made significant strides in community development and as a staunch advocate for Sarawak’s interests in the Dewan Rakyat,” Abang Johari told the local press on Sunday after paying his last respects at BEM Church here.

Abang Johari was accompanied by his wife,  Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

“A stalwart within the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Mutang continued to lend his expertise and wisdom to the political landscape,” he said.

He said Mutang’s tenure as Senate President, albeit brief, underscored his commitment to national stability and the progress of Sarawak within the greater Malaysian context.

Abang Johari spoke of the profound loss felt by Sarawak, highlighting Mutang’s irreplaceable role in shaping the state’s trajectory and advocating for its people.

“The legacy of Mutang will forever be etched in the annals of Sarawak’s history, a testament to his unwavering dedication and service to the state and nation,” he added.

Mutang passed away at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur where he was being treated on his return from a working visit to Azerbaijan where he had fallen ill.
