KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed his pride and joy over Sarawak’s victory as the overall champion title in this year’s Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and Para SUKMA.

He stated that the state has successfully met its goal of securing the overall champion titles in both Games.

“Tonight, it has been confirmed that Sarawak is the champion for the Para SUKMA. I have just checked the results on my handphone.

“We have secured more than 80 gold medals and our target is 83. Now, we have met our target including claiming the overall champion title in both Games,” he said.

He said this during the 9th Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards 2019-2023 Ceremony held at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here last night (Sept 27).

On a related note, Abang Johari stressed that the Sarawak government will continue to improve the state’s infrastructure and performing arts scene.

“We want to showcase our culture through singing, theatre, and plays. That is why the government has approved funds for the development of the performing arts centre here.

“Sarawak is at the forefront of Malaysia’s performing arts scene. And our performances have attracted significant attention.

“Just imagine, the opening ceremony of SUKMA was so impressive because of our cultural presentation,” he said.

Abang Johari also said because of the infrastructure enhancement, it has also lead to Sarawak’s success as the champion in the 2024 SUKMA.

Meanwhile, as of Sept 27, Sarawak has secured 82 golds, 51 silvers and 72 bronzes in the Para SUKMA, while Sabah is currently in second place with 62 golds, 42 silvers, and 31 bronzes.

Nine gold medals will be contested in lawn bowls today (Sept 28) before biennial Games officially conclude.
