MIRI: Sarawak has set a remarkable example for unity and stability, fostering an environment where development can thrive smoothly, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier highlighted Lutong, a suburb of the city here as a symbol of interfaith harmony, where a church and a mosque stand side by side, embodying Sarawak’s spirit of unity.

Speaking during the MADANI Rakyat 2024 Sarawakku Sayang Programme here on Saturday, Abang Johari expressed his pride in Sarawak’s strong communal ties.

He referenced the unique relationship between the mosque and the church in Lutong, where both communities support one another in the most practical ways.

“In Lutong, we see the mosque and church next to each other. On Fridays, when the mosque is full and parking is scarce, the church opens its compound for Muslims to park their cars. On Sundays, when the Christian community goes to church, the mosque returns the favour by offering their parking space,” he explained.

This understanding, rooted in mutual respect and cooperation, is not limited to Lutong alone but is a common practice across Sarawak.

Abang Johari emphasised that regardless of race, religion, or background, Sarawakians live harmoniously, contributing to the state’s stability.

“Unity in Sarawak has made it a stable state, ensuring that development projects are carried out smoothly. We see this in how our leaders work together, regardless of their backgrounds, because our main goal is to develop our society and state,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak’s culture of unity extends beyond its borders, contributing to Malaysia’s overall stability, adding: “When the nation faces political challenges, Sarawak continues to play a stabilising role. A stable Sarawak helps to ensure a stable Malaysia.

Sarawak’s ability to maintain peace and harmony amid diverse communities has been key to its development and prosperity. Abang Johari’s vision is to continue strengthening the state’s unity, focusing on the mission to develop both Sarawak and Malaysia.
