KUCHING: Wives of state leaders came in for some well deserved praise from the head of the government here on Monday.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg put on record his appreciation for them, in particular, for understanding why their husbands have to be away much of the time in the service of people.

“Thank you very much to the wives for their understanding of their husbands’ jobs and for helping us because time is of the essence and we have to execute our duties even on weekends,” he said.

He was speaking at the Premier’s Department Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration at the atrium of the State Legislative Assembly building here.

“We, as state leaders, have only selected weekends to spend with you,” he said.

“Sometimes, you may have free time, but for us, it’s crucial to spend every weekend with the people, studying and assessing the development stage that we have achieved.

“Therefore, we sincerely thank you for your support.”

Abang Johari, meanwhile, also lauded the celebration as a meaningful event that fosters camaraderie and cooperation among public servants.

He emphasised the importance of mutual respect for each other’s cultures, noting the unique working style of the Sarawak Civil Service (SCS).

“I am confident that the SCS is quite different from civil services in other states of Malaysia because we operate as one team, regardless of background or position.

“We share a common objective, which is to develop Sarawak into the most advanced state in Malaysia by 2030.

“On behalf of the cabinet, I express gratitude for the cooperation provided by the civil service, which has enabled us to carry out the entrusted tasks to develop our beloved state,” he added.

Also present were Deputy State Secretary (Operation) Datuk Hii Chang Kee; Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting; Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang; Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin; and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
