KUCHING: Sarawak’s climate change efforts have received recognition from European nations, leading Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to be invited to a forum in Poland addressing global climate and renewable energy concerns.
The Premier said the key to these initiatives lies in the Sarawak government’s determination and commitment to address global climate issues.
“Last year, the global average temperature increased by 1.45 degrees Celsius. If we do not handle this situation well, by 2024-2025, it may reach the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold, which is crucial for human survival.
“Due to our efforts in carbon capture and green hydrogen energy utilisation, they (Poland) want to see Sarawak’s perspective. This has been observed by them; they have been monitoring our efforts.
“That’s why I was invited to deliver a speech,” he said when met by reporters here last night (Apr 18).
According to a press statement released by the Premier’s office, Abang Johari will travel to Poland to discuss Sarawak’s experiences and perspectives on energy transition, renewable energy security, decarbonisation, and environmental sustainability.
He and his delegation will depart for Poland today via the United Kingdom, following an invitation from Marek Wozniak, the Marshal of Poland’s Wielkopolska Region and organiser of the Central European Hydrogen Technology Forum and the Central European Decarbonisation Forum, scheduled to be held in Poznań from Apr 24 to 25.
He is scheduled to speak as a forum panel member in a session called ‘Debate Regions for the Planet’ slotted for 11am to 12 noon local time on Apr 24.
Earlier, Abang Johari and wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang attended a Hari Raya open house event hosted by Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
Also present were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
