KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be traveling on an Airbus aircraft to Langkawi on Monday, using aviation fuel ‘made in Sarawak’.

He was referring to the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from the microalgae carbon capture facility at the Sejingkat Power Plant, which was launched recently.

“We are working with our Japanese partners, using microalgae to produce sustainable aviation fuel. This is a new technology, which will boost the economy of the region in the near future,” he said.

“But, currently the production is still small, so I will be one of the first to ‘test’ (by travelling on the aircraft) the aviation fuel produced from the facility, which is made in Sarawak,” he said.

Abang Johari said this when officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony of a plantation road from Gedong to Kampung Semalatong, Simunjan today.

He Premier will be attending the 16th Edition of Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, LIMA 2023, where the aviation fuel made in Sarawak will be introduced there as well.

The next step, he said, would be to increase the production of algae biomass to produce sustainable aviation fuel on a large scale, which will increase the revenue of Sarawak.

Abang Johari also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the people in Sarawak, who have remained united; which allow the government to fully focus on managing and developing the region.

“Unity among the multiracial society in Sarawak is one of the most important aspects in developing the region.

“As we don’t have racial and religious issues here… so, it allows us (the government) to focus on exploring new ideas, new economic models; as well as to look for new sources of income or revenue to develop Sarawak,” he said.
