KUCHING: All agencies and Divisional Disaster Management Committees (DDMCs) have been instructed to prepare for the coming dry season.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said they had been instructed to monitor the current situation and ensure that all logistics and manpower were ready to be moved at any time.

“While the DDMCs are busy managing Covid-19, at the same time we are also preparing to face the dry season,” he said at the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Covid-19 daily update press conference today.

He urged all Sarawakians to be prepared for the dry season by drinking sufficient water, reducing outside activities, and refraining from carrying out open burning.

“Do not throw cigarette stubs in the bushes. Wear suitable face masks and ensure you have enough water supply,” he advised.

On another matter, he said that the public would be allowed to go fishing as long as crowds and groups were not involved.

Uggah, who is also SDMC chairman, pointed out that fishermen had been allowed to fish even from early on during the movement control order (MCO) as this was their livelihood.

“What we do not encourage is activities such as fishing tourism,” he said.

On Wednesday (May 27), Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that fishing would not be allowed if it was done in a way that could result in crowding — such as group fishing activities or gatherings at commercial ponds.

However, he said that individuals would not be stopped for fishing alone.
