KUCHING: The wearing of face masks should not be optional anymore since Sarawak is already affected by the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is common sense, and as Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president Macky Joseph told New Sarawak Tribune recently, prevention is better than cure.
Macky, who said the wearing of face masks was not compulsory for students, thought that it should be highly encouraged if schools were to keep their students and staff members safe.
He said that although Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced that the wearing of masks was not compulsory for students, the directive or order should be reviewed quickly.
“The wearing of face masks should not be optional since Sarawak has recorded several local Covid-19 transmissions,” he said.
He noted that that some schools were even told by the state government to postpone their reopening. They are 87 schools in Kuching, 48 in Padawan and three in Kota Samarahan.
“Safety is priority, so let’s be safe not only in school but also outside the school compound.
“Discipline is very important and should be made stricter to cope up with the infectious disease,” he said.
He further reminded that if one feels sick or have the symptoms of the disease, then just stay at home and take proper medication.
