KUCHING: The prices of goodies that filled almost all markets and supermarkets have increased to the dismay of the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrants.
From cookies and home decorations to groceries, the prices of such items have increased by more than 10 per cent, according to shop owner at the Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre here, Madam Lau in her 50s when met at a random price check survey by the New Sarawak Tribune on Thursday.
Based on the survey, what she said was true as even the price of the delicious cookies now costs not less than RM20 with the exception of the cake lapis (layer cake) which still costs RM10.
And from RM20 onwards, the delicious popular Golden Momo biscuits, baked by the Mayflower Crazy Cookies, are priced at RM28 per plastic bottle, 3 in 1 cookies (RM28), pumpkin wholemeal (RM28), pineapple tarts at a whooping RM34, croquant biscuits (RM28) and Tri Angel cookies (RM28).
Such spiraling costs due to the economic slowdown in the country have, sort of, dampened the spirit of not only the CNY celebrants celebrating the festivity this year but also the non-celebrants.
Hence, there may be less excitement going around this coming CNY celebration and no one can exactly say it is not because of the weather but rather the slow economic slowdown.
