SIBU: The Sarawak Prison Department aims to generate a sales revenue of RM46,722 from Borneo Prison Infocraft Programme this year.
Prison Department Malaysia director Ajidin Salleh said that the programme, which started in 2018 in Miri, has achieved total sales of RM20,724.
He said this during the launch of the MyPride Fair Sarawak 2023, which was officiated by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee at Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang Phase 2 here on yesterday.
Ajidin mentioned that the department is collaborating with the Skills Development Department to produce more qualified teaching staff. This will help ensure that inmates who receive certification can attract employers and find employment opportunities after their release.
To provide career opportunities for inmates after release, the department, he said, has established the Sarawak Songket Weaving Workshop at Puncak Borneo Prison since November 16, 2019. They are also in the process of establishing a Sarawak Songket Workshop at the Bintulu Correctional Centre.
Last year, the department had an impressive 143 per cent of inmates participating in the intermediate-level skills certification program, surpassing the 70 per cent target.
However, as of June 2023, the inmates have achieved 67.60 per cent in intermediate-level certified skills, slightly below the annual target of 80 per cent.
