Prisoner fined RM3,000 for injuring fellow inmate

KUCHING: A prison inmate was fined RM3,000, in default one year’s imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court on today (June 28) for injuring a fellow inmate.

Shahadan , 28, from Kampung Paya Mebi, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which was read before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.

According to the charge, he was accused of intentionally causing injury to Mohd Syahrin Abdullah, 35, in a dormitory room at Puncak Borneo Prison around 8.30pm on May 9.

If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, fined, caned, or any combination thereof.

Based on the case facts, during the incident, a prison officer on duty in the security section heard inmates shouting about a fight between two prisoners.

Upon arriving at the scene, the officer saw the victim with injuries to the back of his head, and the defendant admitted to hitting the victim with a bed iron rod.

The bloodied victim was then taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The officer also filed a police report for the prison’s reference to prevent future incidents.

It is understood that the defendant acted out of dissatisfaction with the victim for not respecting the dorm leader.

The case was prosecuted by prosecuting officer Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the defendant was not represented by a lawyer.
