FLOODS IN SIBU

SIBU: There is a probability that Malaysia Day do tomorrow (Sept 16) might be slightly disrupted if the flood situation here does not change.

In fact the situation here on this morning (Sept 15) was very bad as flood water was still rising.

Bomba Zone 4 (Sibu) chief Janggan Muling said, among the affected areas were in the central region, namely in Sibu, Kanowit, Song and Kapit.

“The affected areas in Sibu were at Jalan Ding Lik Kong, Pekan Sungai Merah, Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Jalan Lanang, Jalan Khoo Peng Loong and Jalan Kong Yit Khim. All these roads were still passable to all vehicles except for Jalan Kong Yit Khim.

“While in Kanowit, the affected areas were Kanowit town centre and Jalan Lukut / Kanowit. Both places were submerged by water as high as up to two feet,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (Sept 15).

Janggan said, in Song, a temporary evacuation centre (PPS) has started to open at SK Nanga Embuau involving a total of 122 victims who had been placed there.

“Surveys found that the Song Passenger Terminal was also submerged in water where the water was 11 metres high.

“However, the weather today (Sept 15) is good and we hope the water will recede quickly,” he added.

He explained that as of 10.30am this morning the water of the Batang Rajang river showed a downward trend.

He explained that his personnel had been monitoring the situation from time to time.

Surveys found that the flood situation in Sibu and Kanowit was under control but some shops in Kanowit were generally closed due to the floods.
