BAU: The Chap Goh Mei (15th day of the Chinese New Year) parade is traditionally held by the Hakka community in Siniawan.
According to Siniawan Town Kapitan Bong Boon Koh, the event is now attracting visitors in the state and abroad.
“In the past, the parade was attended by villagers and celebrated with lion and dragon dances.
“They would march from Shui Guet Gong Temple to Jugan before ending at Keranji which was as far as 6 km,” he said.
He told reporters during the Chap Goh Meh Parade held conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration in Siniawan Town here Saturday.
Bong revealed that yesterday’s procession was attended by 30 groups of lion and dragon dancers from Kuching and local residents.
“The parade continued into the night with the participation of 67 groups of lion and dragon dancers,” he added.
Meanwhile, Shui Guet Gong Siniawan Temple Chairman Penghulu Lai Shey Hiong said the procession was held for good luck.
“Throughout the year, we have also been praying for the safety and security of Siniawan town,” he added.
About 1,000 people witnessed the colourful parade organised by Shui Guet Gong Temple.
