KUCHING: The 100-year-old Chinese temple in Kampung Muara Tebas here is a tourism potential which should be further promoted as a tourism product to attract domestic and foreign tourists to the area.
Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said although Kampung Muara Tebas is known to be a Muslim-majority area, the existence of the old Chinese temple reflects the unity of the Chinese and Malay communities.
She suggested that both communities could work hand in hand to look after the temple to enhance unity among themselves.
“This is among the tourist attractions which many do not know. It is hoped that the local community can take the opportunity to support domestic tourism by visiting interesting places in Kampung Muara Tebas,” she said after visiting the Ching San Yen Temple today (Jan 1).
She said besides the temple, other attractions included the Batu Nibung and fresh seafood outlets.
Nancy said Kampung Muara Tebas will be further developed under a strategic planning proposed by Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni to preserve the historic area.
“Not only do we want to attract more people to this area, we also want to boost the local economy here,” she said.
