BINTULU: A total of 240 people participated in the Mega CPR Programme 2023 organised by the Bintulu Hospital Academic Club and Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) in collaboration with Bintulu Hospital here.
The programme themed ‘Bintulu Celik CPR’ is one of the largest community-based programmes organised after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic to improve literacy and hands-only CPR skills among the community.
UPM Bintulu Campus principal Dr. Kamil Latif described the programme as important to promote awareness of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation or CPR to participants while also ensuring the local community is equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to handle emergency situations.
“It should be noted that CPR is not only used by medical professionals but is a skill that everyone should learn.
“In fact, studies have shown that when bystanders are able to perform CPR before emergency services arrive, a person’s chance of survival increases significantly,” he said.
In the meantime, Dr Kamil emphasised that university students, especially UPM students at the Bintulu Sarawak campus, need to be prepared with this knowledge and skills because students, especially agriculture and forestry students, are involved in physical learning in the field, which may expose them to the risks of accidents.
The Mega CPR 2023 programme was launched by the Special Officer to Bintulu Member of Parliament, Steven Kong Kai Seng representing Datuk Sri Tiong King Sing.
