KOTA SAMARAHAN: Ninety-nine Form Two students from 10 schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian, Lundu and Bau, Demak Baru and Bako recently attended a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Camp Tour “(Kem Jelajah STEM)” programme at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak Branch.
The two-day programme, held at UiTM Sarawak’s second campus here, was jointly organised by UiTM Sarawak, State Education, Science and Technological Research Ministry (MESTR) and the State Education Department.
The programme aimed to inculcate interest in STEM among students.
During the closing ceremony yesterday, UiTM’s Deputy Rector for Research and Industrial Linkages, Associate Professor Dr Abang Zainoren Abang Abdurahman hoped the university would conduct more STEM programmes for schoolchildren.
According to the State Education Department, there was a slight increase in STEM students in Sarawak.
It said 24.3 per cent of the Form Four students opted for the Science Stream this year compared to 19.7 per cent in 2017 and 23.2 per cent in 2018.
The STEM Camp Tour programme provided the students with various hands-on activities including making soup from used cooking oil, filtration, exploration, mind cards, truss tower and deformation test, magnetism, car and balloon race, talent night and motivational talks.
Facilitated by 50 lecturers and 22 students from various faculties, the 19 accompanying teachers also participated in few sessions on how to teach using social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and other aids such as Powtoon and Prezi.
