BINTULU: The Sarawak government remains committed to assisting longhouse communities through the Longhouse Loan Scheme (SPRP), introduced since 1978, while emphasising the importance of loan repayments to ensure the sustainability of the scheme.

Chairman of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Abdul Yakub Arbi, stated that up until September this year, a total of 24,553 housing units had been built through 1,131 projects under the scheme, with a total loan amounting to RM505.94 million.

According to him, prompt repayment not only ensures the continuity of the scheme but also benefits the longhouse communities.

“HDC has conducted several ‘randau’ (dialogue) programmes across areas of the Longhouse Loan Scheme this year, aimed at raising awareness among borrowers about the importance of loan repayment,” he said during the Randau Programme with Longhouse Heads and Individual Loan Borrowers (PKPRP) for the Bintulu Division at the Similajau Hall, Bintulu Port Authority, here on Wednesday.

Abdul Yakub, who is also Balingian assemblyman, added that the programme serves as a platform to educate borrowers about their responsibilities and to introduce more flexible and user-friendly repayment methods.

“We hope that borrowers will take this opportunity to understand the payment options available and commit to fulfilling their obligations,” he said.

He expressed hope that the programme will encourage borrowers to be more proactive in repaying their loans for the well-being and advancement of the longhouse communities.
