LINGGA assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor has proposed that the Sarawak government establish a special condition allowing single applicants to apply for housing assistance programmes.
She believed this initiative would ensure that single individuals also benefit from the facilities provided by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.
Noorazah acknowledged the GPS government’s commendable efforts to assist Sarawak’s residents in owning low-cost houses through the housing programme managed by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). “The programme has received a positive response from the community, particularly in rural areas classified as B40 and M40.”
She added: “One of the existing programmes, Rumah Spektra Permata (RSP), caters to applicants earning between RM2,500 and RM6,000 who own land with a minimum area of 750 to 850 square feet. However, the current condition prioritises married applicants, overlooking the needs of single individuals.”
She emphasised the importance of representing the voices of the youth and single people, advocating for special conditions that allow single applicants to access the facilities provided by the GPS government and fulfil their dream of owning their own homes.
“This approach will also address issues where overcrowding occurs in houses due to adult children facing housing constraints despite being employed,” she said during her debate in support of the Head of State’s address at the DUN sitting on Friday (May 19).
Noorazah also raised concerns regarding the long-pending application for land ownership in Kampung Melayu Triso. She requested the Sarawak government and the Land and Survey Department to review and expedite the approval process for the 53 residential lots applied for since May 28, 2015, through the Kampung Triso Darat village expansion scheme on government reserve land.
She stressed the urgency of granting approval in 2023, “as the people of Kampung Triso greatly need the assurance and legitimacy of their residential status. Addressing this issue would provide them with the certainty they deserve and eliminate any doubts surrounding their residential sites.”
