KUCHING: Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah fully supports the nomination of women candidates in the 15th General Election (GE15) to promote gender equality.

The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Women’s chief expressed her hopes that the other component parties in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) would have the same approach as Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) on the matter.

“By following the decision made by PRS acting president Datuk Joseph Salang, InsyaAllah there will be more women candidates who will be able to serve the rakyat through their involvement in politics.

“That is why we are in full support of the proposal. If (all component parties in) GPS are to take a similar approach, there will be an increase in women candidates or representatives than there are now,” she said during the closing ceremony of people of disabilities (OKU) empowerment workshop at Merdeka Palace Hotel here on Sunday (Jan 23).

Recently, Salang announced that PRS might field a woman candidate for one of its six parliamentary seats in the GE15.

“We want to be gender correct. We don’t want to purposely exclude anybody. We make sure that we include women in the electoral process,” he said, adding that PRS was making early preparation although the date for GE15 has yet to be announced.
