THE proposal to create a heritage and cultural village in Mukah will be a priority under the tourism development list for the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA).
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Deputy Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the cultural heritage of the Malanau community is one of the main tourist destinations for Sarawak.
“Mukah is the heartland for the heritage and culture of the Melanau. It is often frequented by visitors both local and foreign alike, especially during the Kaul Festival.
“One of the main attractions in Mukah are tibou games, beach games, Alu-Alu dance performances, menyak dance and umai dishes will attract more tourist to come to Sarawak.
“As such, the ministry welcomes the suggestion to establish a Heritage and Cultural Village there,” he said when replying to Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine during question time today.
Snowdan said his ministry is working closely with Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Melanau, Oya (LAKMO) in developing the Melanau Heritage Gallery in Mukah.
“In October last year, a two-day workshop was conducted to finetune the gallery’s exhibitions, and it was supported by Dana Mudahcara Warisan, Seni dan Budaya.
“The gallery, which is showcasing the Melanau heritage and culture, is expected to be completed by this year,” he added.
